Wifi Ad-hoc Connection On Windows 8

Unfortunately, Windows 8 doesn’t include an option to create and setup ad-hoc network connection by default. But there is a nice tricky way to setup adhoc wifi connection manually without having to install any third-party software.

How could it be done? There is a useful hidden utility named as Network Shell or simply netsh. Basically, this utility is developed to let users configure network devices in both client and server editions of Windows.

netsh wlan show drivers

7- The CMD should now answer with:

hosted network couldn’t started

8- Now disable and re-enable current wireless network device

9- Then refresh network adapter list from Device Manger

10- That’s it.

And if you want to share your internet connection with other devices via this Adhoc connection, simply follow these:

1- Open Control Panel window
2- Go to Network and Internet >> Network Connections
3- You should now see a connection which is connected to Internet
4- Right-click on it then click Properties
5- Click on Sharing tab

7- You’ll also see:

“Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection”

8- Tick to enable that option
9- In Home Networking Connection, type in the name of newly created ad hoc connection
10- That’s it. Your internet connection should now be shared

But if you’ve found some issue, you may also need to check the assigned IP Address of newly created ad-hoc connection. Simply right-click on it >> Properties >> then check it via TCP/IPv4 Properties. And if you do not see any IP assigned to, simply run this command on CMD again:

run netsh wlan start hostednetwork

And if everything done right, you should now be able to use another wifi handset to connect to your Windows 8 laptop and access Internet via that newly created personal hotspot connection.
