How to Downgrade OS X 10.7.1 Lion to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 – Current stable official release version of OS X Lion is the Lion 10.7.1 while developers can taste OS X Lion 10.7.2 build 11C43. But somehow you might feel not so comfort with the OS X Lion as much as with OS X Snow Leopard.

So how to revert OS X Lion back to Snow Leopard (read: to downgrade)? Well, whatever is your reason, simply read and follow these steps to downgrade your OS X 10.7.x Lion to 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.

1st Trick to Downgrade to Snow Leopard

Boot up your OS X Lion >> press the Alt key once you hear the boot chime >> select Restore HD to boot Lion in Recovery Mode >> select the “Restore From Time Machine Backup” >> insert the backup files if stored in external drive >> then hit Continue >> follow the on-screen instructions >> once all done simply restart your Mac.

2nd Trick to Downgrade to Snow Leopard

1- Boot up your OS X Lion
2- Press the Alt key once you hear the boot chime
3- Select Restore HD to boot Lion in Recovery Mode
4- Insert the backup files if stored in external drive (if any)
5- Select Disk Utility
6- Select your backup partition from the sidebar
7- Go over to the [Restore] tab.
8- Select your startup drive as Destination by dragging it from the sidebar to the Destination field
9- Finally hit [Restore] button.
10- Boot back from your startup drive and voila!! You should now on Snow Leopard.

3rd Trick to Downgrade to Snow Leopard

Well, instead of those steps explained above, the very easier way to have Snow Leopard up and running on your Mac again, is by re-installing it from scratch. This is the last option you have especially if you don’t have any backup files on hand.

To do that simply follow:
1- Insert Leopard installation DVD into your Mac
2- Restart your Mac
3- Press Alt key when you hear the startup chime
4- Select Mac OS X Install DVD
5- Follow on-screen instruction
6- You might need to reboot several times and you should on Leopard again

As the OS X Snow Leopard is not as new as Lion, you might need to regularly check for new security patches and upgrades to make sure that your Leopard is safe. [via]

The downgrade is not a 100% successful task. If you own an iMac 2011 with preloaded Lion then you cannot downgrade the OS without using some tricks and own an older mac machine because the minimum requirement is OS X SL 10.6.6 and the last official release is 10.6.3. There are enough posts about how to do (with a fire cable).
Then you probably got a backup and follow the post here.
If you don’t own an older mac, the task may seem impossible.
    Personally I never tried.
